Times have been hard for local businesses, but Brown & Holmes (Tamworth) Ltd has not only turned the corner, but is currently boasting a record order book. In fact, the company is so busy that it has recently taken on two graduates as trainee design engineers.

Brown & Holmes is a sub-contractor for the three main machine tool builders in the UK, as well as supplying directly to a large number of local, national and international customers. It offers a complete service encompassing design, manufacture and assembly, through to testing and inspection, tooling support and installation. The company is also the sole UK agent for Forkardt workholding standard and special rotary power chucks, expanding mandrels and steady rest packages.

The company’s bespoke manufacturing services are proving more popular than ever, so the decision was made to increase the in-house design team to six people. This team works with closely with customers to deliver their requirements using the latest 3D design and solid modeling techniques. The team can tackle a wide range of demands from simple workholding through to special purpose machine tools and manual and CNC manufacturing assembly.

The company delivers high precision machining and complex assembly work to a wide range of customers within the automotive, aerospace, oil and power generation industries. Quality is monitored at every stage of development and metrology calibration is traceable to National and International standards. By keeping services in-house, Brown & Holmes is able to maintain the high standards of quality its customers demand.
Brown & Holmes has also always been committed to offering apprenticeships and, in fact, Carl Baker and Kevin Ward, joint Directors of Brown & Holmes (Tamworth) Ltd, both started as apprentices with the company back in the 1970's.

Kevin Ward, said: “We have always believed in developing talent in-house throughout the business. When it came to recruiting new design engineers, so much of what we do is very specialist that it made sense to take on graduate engineers and train them up in the skills we need. We are pleased to be in a position to be able to invest in our future ability to design and manufacture.”

This commitment to offering quality products and service does not stop when the finished products are delivered. Brown & Holmes offers ongoing tooling and installation support as well as full technical back-up to their customers.
Brown & Holmes’ expertise is not just in demand in the UK either. From its Tamworth base, the company exports its workholding solutions throughout Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Africa and America.
Kevin Ward said: “As for so many businesses, the past eighteen months have been very difficult; however we have managed to retain our 45-strong workforce and are now adding on two new recruits. Our order book is healthier than ever and we are looking to the future with tremendous optimism.”
